NEW YORK: Veteran journalist Arthur S. Brisbane, grandson of legendary Hearst editor Arthur Brisbane, this summer became The New York Times public editor for a three-year term.

As the paper’s ombudsman, Brisbane, 59, succeeds Clark Hoyt. Brisbane will begin this summer.

The public editor reports on the work of The Times’ 1,000 journalists. “I think journalists and editors are struggling with establishing standards for digital news,” Brisbane said. “Are those standards different from content in print? And if they’re different, how do we justify that they’re different?”

Brisbane was a reporter and editor at The Washington Post, editor and publisher of The Kansas City Star and a senior executive at Knight-Ridder.
