National Equirer Gets Some Respect

By being the first and, largely, the only publication pursuing the John Edwards infidelity story through his denials of the affair and of fathering a child out of wedlock, The National Enquirer is under consideration for a Pulitzer Prize, and it has strong support for its bid from other journalists, like “Emily’s Post” on Politics Daily who writes in part: “While its own editor concedes that the paper would never be given a Pulitzer Prize — the jury is dominated by the newspaper establishment — I believe the time has come for us to recognize the Enquirer’s political investigative reporting.”

The success has Barry Levine, The National Enquirer’s executive editor, considering opening a Washington bureau to look for more dirt among politicians.

It’s a curious time for The Enquirer to be soaring. Its parent company, American Media, run by David Pecker who is pictured right, nearly went bankrupt last year.
