OPC Board Elects Deidre Depke as Club Secretary

At last night’s meeting, the board elected Deidre Depke as Secretary, replacing Jonathan Dahl, who resigned to take a new job at a digital startup in California. Congratulations, Deidre!

In other news, OPC board member Azmat Khan will be joining BuzzFeed News’ investigative unit in December as an investigative reporter. The unit of 10 reporters is led by Pulitzer-winning journalist Mark Schoofs. This means Azmat will be in New York and able to attend meetings in person. Congrats, Azmat!

Khan currently leads the digital team at Al Jazeera America’s flagship show America Tonight. Previously, she was a digital reporter and producer with the PBS series FRONTLINE.

Her work has earned the Online News Association award for “General Excellence in Online Journalism” (small) in 2012, the Gannett Foundation Award for Innovative Investigative Journalism in 2013 and an Emmy nomination in “New Approaches to Documentary Film” in 2014. She has also been selected for CNN’s “New Guard,” honoring “the next generation of newsmakers,” for Foreign Policy’s “Womerati,” women to follow on international affairs, and for the Huffington Post’s “50 People In Media You Should Subscribe to on Facebook.”

Khan received an M.St. in women’s studies from Oxford University, where she was a Clarendon Scholar, and a B.A. in political science and women’s studies from the University of Michigan. She has also studied at the American University in Cairo, Egypt.
