Praise Needed for Unnamed Heroes Behind the Camera

Behind every television news report from violent regions of the world are cameramen and women who put their lives at risk to shoot images needed to tell the story. Sadly, those heroes go largely unnamed and their work unattributed. In an op-ed piece for the Wall Street Journal, John Reverand calls for an industry-wide change in this practice, for television networks and wire agencies to start crediting their camerapeople with the same care that news organizations credit photographers and reporters.

“These agency producers and cameramen are not celebrities,” Reverand writes. “Self-promotion and arrogance are quickly dispatched, often with biting humor. They earn a fraction of what their network counterparts are paid. The personal sacrifices they make are daunting. All too many have lost their lives.”
