Silva at NYC Marathon

From The New York Times: It’s fair to say that Joao Silva has come a long way in a year.

Little more than 12 months after stepping on a mine in southern Afghanistan and losing his legs, Mr. Silva finished the New York City Marathon in less than three hours, placing 52nd in his division.

“If you’d asked me a year ago if I was going to run a marathon,” he said over the phone a few hours after the race, “I’d look at you like you were crazy.”

He was tired. But he did it. Racing in the handcycle division, Mr. Silva conquered the route in 2 hours 38 minutes 14 seconds.

He surprised even himself with his pace. He recently had a colostomy reversal and only got back on the cycle a few weeks ago. “I’ve done some training, but not as much as I should have,” he said. “I was banking on three and a half hours, you know?”
