Steiger to Step Down as ProPublica’s Editor

From The New York Times: Paul E. Steiger, the former longtime managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, will step down at the end of the year as the editor in chief and chief executive of ProPublica, the nonprofit investigative news organization that he started nearly five years ago.

Effective January 1, 2013, the project’s managing editor, Stephen Engelberg, will replace Steiger as editor in chief and Richard Tofel, ProPublica’s general manager, will step in as president. They will share the position of chief executive,Steiger, 69, told his staff on Monday.

Steiger will transition to a role as executive chairman, a position that will allow him to spend about 60 percent of his time assisting with fundraising and weighing in on strategic decisions. The rest of his time, he said, he hopes to spend with his family and young grandchildren in Los Angeles.
